Our Township

Lehigh Township was surveyed in 1735 by orders of Thomas Penn.  It was proposed that 6500 acres be set aside for Native Americans, but the land was soon settled by immigrants instead.  The area had been called Adjacents to Allen before the courts detemined it was to be called Lehigh Township when it was established in October 1752.

Lehigh Township has a variety of historic sites throughout its five villages.  They include Indian Trail Park and Edgemont Park, former one-room and two-room schools, old hotels and businesses (some that no longer exist), churches, cemeteries and homesteads. At one time, there were as many as 29 one or two room schools in Lehigh Township. Many of the former schoolhouses have been converted into homes over the years.  Some were modified so much that they no longer resemble the original building, others that were not lived in have deteriorated or are no longer existing. Portions of the parks still exist and some of the old hotels are still operating.  They will be mentioned in the Village information and links embeded as more detailed pages are created.
